Joker Pickle's Reaction 20th Anniversary video

Paul and Barri have put together a video for the 20th anniversary of Joker Pickle's Reaction.

What the hell is Joker Pickle's Reaction? Well, it's a band I played drums in...you guessed it, a coupla decades ago. It was my first band that actually got out, played shows and recorded.

For further relevance to this blog: much of the artwork (fliers, merchandise, cassette & CD covers) you see in the video was done by myself around that time (1991-'93/'94)

This band is not reuniting. If you "were there," enjoy a few minutes of nostalgia.
If you weren't there, feel free to make fun of (for example) how fat I am now by contrast.

Word has it, there may be more videos to follow. Stay tuned to the Joker Pickle's Reaction YouTube channel.

Red Wilder Blue CD package

Just got done with this design for Long Beach band Bella Novella...

The concept I was given by the band was that the girls (voc/kybd & drums) have dark hair with bangs, and the guy (gtr) has a burly, red beard; "bangs-beard-bangs" with no faces. The text is all me; no fonts. At some point I had to dial it back for legibility.

Bella Novela has been described as Spaghetti-Western Disco Rock Opera -- very cool -- check them out!

2nd remix project

I was pleasantly shocked to be asked by one of my favorite artists — definitely my favorite Swedish artist — to remix one of his songs.

I don't consider myself an engineer and I'm definitely not a deejay, so I never saw myself remixing 2 of my favorite artists' material. But I am, and having fun doing it.

I finished and posted my remix of Zombi's Slow Oscillations.

Above is the album art I created/collaged, obviously based on the cover of Escape Velocity.

As I mentioned before, this is for a public contest.

All submissions are posted on Soundcloud, for everyone to hear.

I would be sad but not shocked if mine ultimately gets skipped or scanned through hastily by judges Moore and Paterra. I personally found it a hard slog getting through the sea of submissions and separating the gems from the...non-gems.

That's life in a nutshell, I suppose.

My remix will remain on the Gazilcher Soundcloud page, until I'm asked to remove it by Zombi, or any member of Genesis, including the great Chester Thompson.

I got this book when I was 11.

Around this time, there seemed to be a lot of similar science fiction artwork books, packaged as some kind of "guide to the universe." I ate them up.

One thing about this particular book is that it contained not only tons of full color paintings, but also an array of fictitious printed items and logos. These included logos for interstellar airlines, such as Pan Galactic and Aurora-Magellan. Also, interplanetary customs forms, tickets, passports, travel brochures, menus, all kinds of stuff.

I loved the all of these. The designs, layouts, typography, and, oh, those logos. I thought they were so cool. I used to redraw many of these with pencil and markers. This was years before I would ever learn the term graphic design.

Around this same time, I also remember having a lot of Nasa stickers. These were of insignias for various Apollo, and later Space Shuttle, missions. Growing up across the street from the Johnson Space Center ("Houston, we have a problem"), and with several of the neighborhood dads being astronauts, you tend to end up with these things. Anyhow, I really loved those designs as well. There are more examples, but I'll stop here.

I was thinking about this lately, and I just had the urge to give a big F*CK YOU to some of the a**holes/b!tches at my college.

I'm referring to those who tried to make me feel like some kind of sellout for declaring Graphic Design as my major for a time. Some expressed their disappointment in me, others made snide comments and smirked down on me.

I ended up getting my degree in Illustration, but the point is this: I never aspired to be a fine artist. My major inspirations at a young age were comic books and sci-fi/fantasy book covers. Later, movie concept sketches, sci-fi/space-related graphic design, and later still 60's gig posters and 70's album covers.

I also made some subtle changes to my website.

Unfortunately, the layout still depends on the use of frames. But since I'm not focusing on web design in my general work, it's difficult to make the quantum leap beyond ye olde html into php, etc.

Album art is a term sometimes used (shame on us) for the tiny pic that accompanies an MP3. I am of the generation that covets it’s collections of vinyl eased out of gatefold sleeves. I just looked at the MP3 album art as a different animal. A teensy weensie, possibly imaginary one, but a different animal.

I saw it as a continuation of the traditional artform of adolescent, aspiring musicians in creating their own artwork for albums that would probably never see the light of day. Hand drawn on a TDK SA-90 cassette j-card, for example.

Gazilcher album art is rarely for an album at all. A different “cover” can be created for each song. Also, because they are typically viewed at a ridiculously small size, I sometimes harken back to the days of having to create illustrations and typography for video games in a crude, blocky pixel medium.

I recently did a few more logos for Palindrome Entertainment; specifically: Mr. Mister Miyagi (80's Karaoke with Live Band), Mr. Mister Mustard (Beatles Karaoke with Live Band) and Spiders from Bars (Bowie tribute).

Last weekend, I attended the Marillion Weekend Montreal, which was a very amazing and emotional experience.

Back to work tomorrow, as well as working on something for a great local band. Hopefully it'll turn out good enough to see the light of day...

Manning Town update

I mentioned earlier that I was lettering Paul Sharar's graphic novel Manning Town.

The rough draft has been honed to the point that we've deemed it acceptable to send to an interested prospective publisher. And sent it we have. Which brings us to a phase of pre-production known as The Hoistingtons, if that makes any sense to you.

Hopefully a publishing deal can be struck. We shall see.

I'd like to thank Paul for inviting me to work on the book and Mark for teaching me a thing or two about comic lettering and comics in general.

As "they" say, the "landscape" of the internet, social media, etc. is ever changing.

Every once in a while, it seems that I switch avenues for posting various, silly, personal things online.

Not long ago, I re-consolidated things into this blog, bailing out of a crumbling social media site. Now I seem to be rerouting some of that stuff back into some other social media site.

So, I just wanted to say that this blog is not dead. I'm still here, alive and well. The posts are less frequent because certain content is being posted in a more personal venue.

Comic lettering project

I am currently working on lettering Paul Sharar's upcoming graphic novel, Manning Town.

Although I have hand-lettered a comic in the past, this will be my first comic book digital lettering project. Also, this will be Mark Sharar's comic book scripting debut. Wish us both luck.

My digital lettering duties are inevitably augmented by various pre-production, pre-press concerns, from artwork adjustments, corrections, graphic design, layout, pulling my hair out, etc.

Paul has drawn and inked the entire 4-part book. He and his brother Mark have collaborated on changing and finalizing the plot, and Mark has written the final script.

Publisher and release date is as of yet undetermined...

Nice to be involved in comics somehow, and on some kind of creative team again.

Spock's Beard - only 2010 US appearance

I had the fortune of seeing Spock's Beard last night.

Allegedly, Nick D'Virgilio only has the month of September off from his day job as a drummer for Cirque du Soleil; just enough time for a brief tour of Europe (which is probably more fruitful for a progressive rock band than slogging around the massive United States where prog fans are scattered, too few and far in between).

Luckily Jim Harrel was able to get them to do one show in their approximate home-central area.

I didn't bring my camera because they were banned at the last show I attended at this venue. This time, it turned out photography was discouraged, but allowed (sans flash, of course). So what you see here are some mediocre cell phone shots from my excellent, 2nd row, center seat.

I have a piece posted in the Post-it™ note album cover art gallery on the mini-site for The Pineapple Thief's new album Someone Here is Missing.

If you want to spot mine, it's the only one with 4 colors (so far).

I quickly sketched it out from memory, using whatever pens & pencils were at my desk. After submitting it, I looked up the original, and of course I was way off.

BlowUpBlow videos

Paul Zanzler has assembled 2 videos of our band BlowUpBlow* (2003-2008) compiled from photographs, video and artwork.

One is for It's Time; a song that was often a live show closer/favorite. We did a great recording of at The Compound studio in Long Beach, CA. Unfortunately it was never finally mixed, mastered nor released...

The 2nd video features an audio track that for a song we were laboring over off and on for a long time during the twilight of the band's run. It may sound trebly, but, hey, it was just a practice recording, quite possibly on cassette...Visually, this is a pretty good nostalgic overview slide show. Personally, I felt that we were creating music better than that of each our previous bands.

*If you're new, I was the drummer in this band, and did the artwork for the releases, merch, flyers, etc.

I just found out that Frank Frazetta passed away today.

He has immeasurably influenced my art, my imagination, and quite possibly my taste in women(!) since my age was a single digit.

Here is the first news story I caught on this loss.

It is still setting in with me, so I'm not ready to create a tribute shrine here and now...

Lake Dolores

Lake Dolores is the musical duo of Eric Dunn and Andy Wenger. They mostly just write and record songs (using a drum machine). But once in a while they will get a live show and I sit in on drums.

I was glad to have at least one full band practice with them for our show next Sunday (4-25-10)

This should be a relieving deviation. Normally my requests for a practice, a CD, or even a mere list of songs I will need to know remain unfulfilled until the night of the show, leaving me to play it by ear. I have their older material on CDs, but which songs will they pick for the set?

The funny thing I realized at the practice session is that the 2 guys who wrote and recorded the songs don't seem to know the material any better than I do!

I may be exaggerating, but in regards to any material recorded in the last couple of years: a typical Lake Dolores song is written and recorded in the same evening session. After that, it's in the can. Since they generally don't gig, they have no need to rehearse or even relearn their own songs. Additionally, the songs aren't written and recorded with the intention of playing live, so it's not guaranteed (for example) to be physically possible to sing and play certain parts in a song simultaneously.

So, although I was armed with a CD of most of the songs for a couple of weeks, as well as the practice...Lake Dolores is not in danger of losing it's loose charm. And with those two guys, it's always a riot.

And in case there is any question:

This is not "my new band." I have been sitting in with these guys on the semi-annual gigs for many years now, concurrently with the other bands I was in.

I still have yet to join/form a new band. But I'm still looking and hoping to...

The idea was to find a new project to play in; not to stop playing drums. I still have not found/formed/joined a new band. Not being in a band and playing regularly has in several ways contributed to daily anxiety and frustration.

Anyway...

Prog illustration, Part 2

Last year, I submitted an illustration to a contest (previously mentioned here.) It didn't win.

The winning design, chosen by none other than Mark Wilkinson, was to be used for the sleeve of a compilation CD accompanying an issue of the British magazine Classic Rock Presents Prog.

I listened to the CD, and at certain risk of sounding like a sore loser, it is pure crap, save the Steven Wilson song (from his album Insurgentes, which I've had since March? of last year.) But that doesn't matter; I really wanted to have some of my art involved in the world of progressive rock, regardless.

Anyway, here's the illustration:

I'm painfully aware of a few mistakes, such as the configuration of keys in the front keyboard, etc., so spare me.

Stuff in the works

Just a few things have come up:

1) A piece of artwork I did a few years ago may finally see the virtual light of day.

I did a piece for Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens' solo project Free Moral Agents (MySpace, Facebook).

Rumor has it that the title (and therefore accompanying artwork) caused a bit of controversy resulting in the project being shelved. But, now it's going to be used for digital/online-release-only album art, if all goes well.

I'll post links on where to get it as soon as it's available.

2) I'm going to play drums with Lake Dolores on Sat. April 25 at Alex's Bar. It's been a long time since I played a show, especially with them. It should be fun.

I will ask (since I'm only what one would call a touring member) repeatedly when we are going to practice and what songs we are going to play. Knowing this band, these questions will probably not be addressed until the night of the show. Hopefully this time will break the stereotype! :-)

We're honored to be opening for (what I consider to be an all-star metal band) Project Shepherd.

More details, and *hopefully* a flyer later...

3) I may be doing some lettering and production work for Paul Sharar's forthcoming graphic novel opus Manning Town. Although my work on this will be subservient, I am a big believer in Paul's talents, and so it's an honor.

Musical Telephone Game, Pt. 2

I finished recording/programming my tracks for the MST a couple days ago. I had 5 days to do it, according to the rules. But for me, this meant about 4.5 hours.

Just like anything else, it's never finished; merely abandoned.

I'll save most comments until after the game is over. I did some stuff that sounded right to me. Then I was told what chords the first person used, and what key his tracks were in. This should have helped me, and I figured I would start over. But I ended up going with my first ideas, which may reveal my lack of knowledge of music theory. But, hey, I was invited to play the game.

I'll follow this up when everyone has added their tracks. Hopefully I can post the final product, which may be 5 different mixes; one from each of the participants.

New computer

I finally got a new computer. I've been talking about it for a year or so, and I think I somehow picked the right time and place to get it.

It's going to be a long, drawn out process getting it loaded, fine tuned and running. But it's pretty nice. Should definitely be able to handle my CS4 Master Collection and the audio recording stuff that bogs down my old computer.

Little guy, you have served me well. We've learned and created some great stuff together. But 2GB RAM being the maximum...it's time to move on. And your vertical DVD drive never opens unless I tilt you on your side and try a couple more times.

Can I get a "YEE-HAH?"

I'm working on resolving a shopping cart issue. The cart works. The only problem is that it's configured to charge shipping for individual items. When adding more items, the shipping doesn't adjust to combined items; it merely adds to the shipping total, displaying an exorbitant shipping charge.

As of now, I would adjust the shipping charge myself, and refund the difference to the buyer. But as it appears now, I can understand people being likely to abandon the cart without buying.

Any advice is welcome...

Musical Telephone Game, Part 1

It looks like I've got myself involved in an experimental music game.

The game is experimental, not necessarily the music. Although it can be. And pretty much all my music is experimental, in that I know so little that every thing I do is an experiment. I don't consider myself much of a musician beyond playing drums. But I digress.

The game is something of a musical Telephone Game. No telephones are involved, although email, FTP, etc. will be. It's more like The Telephone Game many of us played when we were young.

Accomplished local tunesmith Jesse Wilder is the instigator of the game. I'm sure I'll refer to him as DM (Dungeon Master) at some point.

It will involve 4 other...musicians. I was going to say local musicians, but I know that one in this group is in Germany, and another is unknown.

5 musicians are picked.

1 musician is designated to start the game, creating/creating/programming 1 or 2 tracks for a piece of music/song that is no longer than 6 minutes.

Musician #1 sends the track to Musician #2, who adds his/her own 1 or 2 tracks to it, mixes it/them in and sends it to Musician #3, who does the same thing, and so on.

By the time Musician #5 is done, the thing will have mutated quite a bit. After that, everyone will give up their high quality wav/aiff files to be mixed. The DM will probably mix the final product, but I'm sure each musician will be able to do their own mix after all is said and done.

Sounds like fun. I'm in the first group, and I'll be the 2nd to add my tracks. Wish me luck.

I'll post the results when the game is over...unless it's crap.

Luckily I was able to create a Valentine's Day card there by hand. They can't cut the power on bristol board, pencil, paint & scissors.

I've been saying for a while that I'm going to delete my Twitter account.

Each time I go to do it, I suddenly read all these great "tweets," and I change my mind. I would like to continue to read stuff posted by (for examples) Jem Godfrey, Mark Kelly, James Hakola, "Sh*t My Dad Says," etc. all on one page.

So I'm gonna keep it open, but I won't be posting anything there (unless the tide changes and I find a reason to start up again).

So that's why the Twitter module (entitled "Fahking Buuhhds Twitt'ring!") on the right side of the page has disappeared.

I did a professional illustrator/graphic designer "no-no" this week.

I submitted an illustration for a "contest." The case for us people to avoid such things is well made all over the internet, so I won't waste time with it here.

The reason I broke the rule, is that it was an opportunity to do a piece relating to Progressive Rock for a Progressive Rock publication. Which never happens. To me, anyway.

Upon completing it last night, I submitted it via email without even sleeping on it.

Hmm...I could've done something about the placement of those hands...hmm...and maybe...

BAH! It is done, submitted and gone (for now). I won't mention it again until I find out it's been accepted or rejected.

I did copyright it, though...

Adrian Belew Power Trio @ Brixton South Bay

I saw the Adrian Belew Power Trio show last night at fairly small club venue called Brixton South Bay in Redondo Beach, CA.

The new stuff he played from e was pretty good. All instrumental stuff, not quite as gnarly as some of the 'Crimson stuff, but will definitely appeal to the Krimhead. Good enough for me to buy the CD, so I did.

I was blown away with a song that I didn't recognize, but after looking up some lyrics I remembered, I believe it was Big Electric Cat. Great song, and an unbelievably cool guitar tone (as if Ade's guitar could ever sound less than cool). The solos in Of Bow and Drum brought a tear to my eye!

I was impressed as the rest of the world with the young brother and sister rhythm section of Julie and Eric Slick. Eric seemed to have flawless technique to the point where I could barely detect any human idiosyncrasy. Disturbingly good, and from what I could see, he barely broke a sweat.

I didn't take down the set list, but some songs I recall were (in no particular order):

The opening band was called Death & Taxes. Never heard them before, but they were pretty good. They were prog with a sense of humor, kind of like King Crimson meets The Minutemen. A guy I met there pointed out that the keyboardist (who I gathered was new to the band) also plays in a local Genesis tribute band called Gabble Ratchet. Good player, although he seemed to still be learning the material, and a pretty darn good singer from what I heard.

The 2 things I forgot to do were a) bring my camera and b) charge my cell phone. These pics were from taken on the phone, and it ran out of juice 3/4 into the show. The sound quality of my phone videos is crap, so I didn't bother filming. I'm there to enjoy the music, and so the photos reflect their own priority level...

I went to CalProg last weekend.

Once again, most of my photos were out of focus, and not worth uploading.
But I got some good video of Karmakanic and It Bites.

The opening band Touch Stone did not win me over.

Although I was a little disappointed in the Agents of Mercy album in light of the players and concept, I thoroughly enjoyed their live set. And, although Karmakanic was exactly the same personnel as Agents of Mercy, they played a set that was equally very emotional, and totally shredding, as any good prog show should be.

One of my favorite drummers Nick D'Virgilio sat in with Agents of Mercy/Karmakanic, and did an amazing job. Especially considering his only actual practice with the band was several hours the day before. There was only 1 moment out of the 4 hours or so that he was onstage where I sensed that they might have made a mistake & been slightly off.

The family & I went to the L.A. County Fair in Pomona, CA.
I took some shots of the great nephew art on the carnival rides.

Under the name of the ride, I've embedded a Photosynth for each. Some are "0% Synthy," which means that the photos didn't stitch together too well. So don't expect an engrossing experience on those. Four Drummers

Last night I got to play percussion with 3 of the greatest drummers in Long Beach: Tim Bender*, Brandon Laws** and Chris Clawson***.

Bender has had the idea for an orchestrated 4-drummer project for a few years. One of the concepts was for it to be very division-of-labor; 4 cogs in the same machine, rather than 4 guys trying to dominate each other in chops or volume.

But last night was completely improvised, getting a feel for how we all can play together, the collective setup, etc.

I believe it was Chris who commented that it was probably the quietest jam session he ever had with multiple drummers involved. I agree with this, for in my experience, even with only 2 drummers, often dynamics quickly go out the window, and the whole thing turns cacophonous and unbearably loud.

It went well enough for us all to agree to meet up again in a week.

Pretty cool for me, 'cos not only is it an honor to play alongside these guys, but it was nice just to play music with some other people. I haven't played since I retired from The Bolides, so I literally had to brush some cobwebs off a drum.
(Well, they are in a garage, so it doesn't take long for those to form, but...)

Phil Collins' Statement Regarding Injury/Drumming

Phil Collins has posted a statement in reaction to an article in The Daily Mail Online regarding his spinal condition effecting his ability to play drums.

In the UK press today, there appeared some articles about Phil's physical state, with some slightly misleading headlines. Here, in Phil's own words, are how he describes his situation:

"There isn't any drama regarding my 'disability' and playing drums.
Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands. After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can't function normally.

"Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any 'distressed' state, stuff happens in life."

Phil

Phil Collins is my favorite drummer and my main inspiration in blowing my savings on my first set of drums (which I still play) at age 17. People age, and things like this happen eventually. Phil and his fans are fortunate that this, along with his ear infection, did not happen earlier in his career.

Progressive Nation Tour 2009

I went to the Progressive Nation Tour 2009 concert at The Greek Theater last week.

My camera still hasn't returned from being fixed, so I could only use my phone camera, which isn't worth much at a concert.

First band: Scale the Summit. Progressive metal ripping young transplanted Houstonian lads with at least 2 extra strings on their guitars & bass. I enjoyed them enough to buy a shirt* & CD...

Unfortunately I have no pics of Bigelf. They rocked. They were underdogs, because they have a very retro 70's rocksound**, rather than being technical shredders like all the other bands. Most bands would sound sloppy next to the other bands on this bill. They did use real Mellotron 400, Hammond C3 & Minimoog.

Zappa Plays Zappa was awesome. Very impressed with and inspired by drummer Joe Travers...

And then there's Dream Theater. Part of me thinks they are total, over-the-top cheese, but I can't shake some strange fascination with them. I had to see them once before I die.

Here is a shot off the big screen, showing Jordan Rudess actually playing his iPhone onstage. Sonically, you would never know it wasn't a professional synth, or his Continuum fingerboard...

(Note: I later found the app he used. It's called Bebot, and you can click here to see a video of JR demonstrating it on YouTube.)

Besides getting onstage to play 1 song with each of the 1st 3 bands, Mike Portnoy called out all the other drummers one-by-one to jam with him side-by-side. This all seemed like support & comradery, but partly to prove that he's the big dog. The first 2 guys seemed nervous, but he couldn't pull a single g*dd*mn trick over on Joe Travers. That guy more than kept up with Mike, and was visibly smiling & laughing his way through. Tearing sh*t up!

Flaming Feline Feces

I would imagine if someone had a decal of the name of a country on their car, they were either from that country and proud of it, or enjoyed (or fantasized about) visiting it. Either way, I would assume they regard it in a positive way.

If the decal is augmented by a figure of Calvin (as in & Hobbs) urinating on it, we can assume they are expressing a disdain for said country.

But what does the choice of typestyle say about it?

Star Wars bed sheets

This is one of those posts that seems completely worthless, unless you, like many of my generation, had those awesome Star Wars bed sheets as a kid.

Pottery Barn stores are selling bed sheets (along with pillow cases, duvets, etc.) of this pattern. On first sight, we can instantly get that rush of nostalgia not unlike the feeling food critic Anton Ego gets upon his first bite of Remy's peasant dish in the movie Ratatouille.

The differences of these to the original are subtle, and really don't affect the effect:
The new pattern is about 2/3 or 1/2 the size of the original, causing less of the design to be cut off on smaller items (i.e. pillow cases). Also, the Star Wars logotype is navy blue on the new one, rather the the gold of the old.

Now that I have a little boy and I find myself at toy stores more often, I'm noticing some pretty bad ass toys I would have gone ape for as a lad.

I know there are tons more great toys out there, and I'm not going to go into some exhaustive research tangent, documenting even 10% of what's available these days. But here are a few snaps of stuff that caught my eye the other day...

Stupid Dream

I had a dream I was Wojtek Szadkowski. I was able to compose & perform soundtracks for any movie or situation. I poured my creativity into creating these soundtracks, and was very proud of them; Great, emotional songs that really enhanced the films.

Then I found out I had been operating in a roped off area in a large gymnasium or convention center.

It was revealed that someone was merely rearranging the furniture within the roped off area, while I was apparently filling in everything else with my imagination. They just had me get on with writing the music. This had been happening over and over, while I was under the illusion that I was doing bigger and better projects each time.

It was like I had been on a creative treadmill all along, spinning my wheels. I was merely kept busy in this warehouse isolated from the outside, under the illusion that I was creating great soundtracks for big time award winning movies. I wasn't being used; just being kept busy; the music wasn't even appreciated, let alone released to the world.

Turns out someone made off with two major pieces of singer/guitarist/synthesizerist(?) Dr. Mikro Fiche’s equipment.

Not cool! The next time you’re Craigslisting, at a pawn shop, or hanging in your shady friend’s garage, be on the lookout for the following:

- Roland KC500 Keyboard Combo Amplifier (looks like this)

- "Fender The Twin” With red knobs and a glow-in-the-dark painted meteor on the grill. The wooden tube protector on the back is broken off.

Just remember, stealing from a scientist is a Cardinal Sin. Stealing from a scientist who doubles as the singer and guitarist in a new-wave-garage band? Now that’s just mean.

Whether it was laughing hysterically at an impromptu mosh pit that broke out (in 2002!) or wondering how long it would take for their robot to break as people kicked it across the dance floor, each Bolides show was as good as the first time I saw them, when I became an instant fan because of their shared affinity for Jon Spencer and Devo. Now, after hundreds of shows, a record on Dionysius and countless hours of scientific experimentation, they are going away for a bit. The science and Long Beach music communities will mourn solemnly.

The District Weekly: The first time I saw the Bolides, I instantly thought of Jon Spencer and Devo—this kind of melding of old punk, garage rock and the new sounds that kind of naturally derived out of these two genres—is that close to the basic idea of the Bolides?
Dr. Mikro Fiche (guitar, synthesizers and vocals): Indeed, spot on! Early on (1996) I placed an ad in The Recycler—does that date this band or what?—looking to start collaborating and recording ideas. I listed that the project would be as if Pussy Galore evolved into the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in outer space.

How difficult has it been to separate your important scientific research from playing music?
Music definitely clears the head, so we can get back to discovering the perfect Clone Cologne or figuring out which came first, T&A or DNA.

So this isn’t necessarily goodbye, but where are you guys going?
The Bolides are going on an ‘extended sabbatical.’

What memories stick out over the years you guys spent together?
One of the craziest times I remember was when we played at Alex’s Bar and a local punk— whose name is pronounced the same as a recent former president—jumped on stage and called for a huddle. He proceeded to let the band know that he wanted to administer mushrooms to us, right away. I laughed; one of us considered taking him up on the offer.

A Band Done

Having played my last show with The Bolides last night, I can say that "I'm not in a band."

...for the first time since (gulp) the '80s.

I didn't start really playing shows until about 1990, but I had been messing around in at least some larval form of a band since the late 1980's.

For the record, The Bolides is officially on an indefinite, extended sabbatical. We agreed on a "never say never" thing, meaning we are free to get together to play whenever we all agree to. So we're not necessarily crying wolf.

Also, as a side note, if the band were to reform without me, they would have my blessings & support as well.

Now I'm looking to play drums in a new band, writing new songs with new folks. Possibly angular, prog-influenced yet catchy SONGS. But definitely I'm open to ideas...
