LIVE REVIEW:

BLOWUPBLOW / ATTRACTIVE AND POPULAR / LIPSTICK TERROR

@ The Prospector
Tues | July 17

By Michael Coyle

"Notes from the back corner: Lipstick Terror did the scream-and-dance thing in black tees without sleeves. This is them in a run-on sentence: fastburstsoftunelessloudandkeepthatmicupintheairwhenyou'renotsingingintoit. Next: Attractive and Popular, who also had an anti-sleeve thing going on, though their outfits were accessorized with tinfoil bowties and gold cummerbunds. They were less on the scream trip than their tourmates and sounded like those bands that play disco drum beats and Gang of Four guitar and have a keyboard like Le Tigre and have fans who wear gym shorts and headbands to clubs. The DJ played Duran Duran right when they finished, and it seemed a good-enough explanation. Always acutely aware of the prevailing style of the moment, Eric (a.k.a. END) from BlowUpBlow rolled up the sleeves of his black tee as soon as he turned on his amp. He'd already blown (up blown) our mind with his theory that Fred Schneider and Jello Biafra are the same person, and he set up more of the same.

Long Beach workhorses BlowUpBlow cruised through new material that scratched their prog itch a bit more (drummer Bob Kurthy must be extra-happy!) than the more-anxious-than-Pere Ubu Sunshine on the Frontline stuff. As always, their guitars (END and singer Paul Zansler) were beaming in from space, and as always the rhythm section (Bob and bassist Dennis Owens) still made it feel like you're getting chased and loving it. But they ended too quickly. And then they exploded."
